چکیده

In India, near Chennai, Pammal Panchayat of Tambaram Taluk, there are more than 145 tannery industries functioning since 1945, covering six square kilometre area. To assess the level of chemical contamination of the study area, 3D model Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) has been generated using GIS software such as Arc Sene, Arc Map. Using the cross validation technique from the software analysis it is observed that among the four interpolation techniques, Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) is the best tool for creating continuous surface for all the chemical characters except for pH and Organic Matter (OM). By overlay analysis, contamination index maps have been generated for three different depths by assigning ranking and weightage (consistency index) for the various chemical parameters. The GIS model provides a better understanding of contaminants spread and the identified interpolation techniques gives closer values to the real existence as in the field. Hence this approach of analysing soil contamination provides a permanent base for monitoring contaminated sites. A GIS-Aided Assessment of the Health Hazards of Cadmium in Farm Soils in Central Taiwan

A geostatistical method was developed to examine the correlation, or lack of it, between the levels of cadmium (Cd) detected in farm soils and those detected in the human specimens collected from residents around the contaminated areas in Changhua County where cadmium contamination of staple rice has been documented. We used the Taiwan EPA environment data in 2002 and human data which were gene...

Assessment of the Environmental Pollution of some Heavy Metals in Abadan City Street Dust using Geographic Information System (GIS)

High concentrations of heavy metals in street dust are considered to be a serious risk to the human health and the environment. In this study, 30 dust samples were collected from the pavements in the main streets of Abadan to determine the level of pollution of heavy metals in the street dust. Heavy metal concentrations were analyzed by inductively coupled spectroscopy (ICP-OES) method. The lev...

Application of GIS for Mapping Oil-Contaminated Soil in Kuwait

Contamination of the environment in Kuwait occurred in 1990-1991 during the Iraqi invasion and due to explosion of more than 700 oil wells. Oil contamination caused serious damage to the environment. This study was conducted to estimate the extent and volume of contaminated soil by using remote sensing, GIS application and field survey.. A map of the area was developed by GIS showing four types...

Evaluation of Soil Contamination Indices in a Mining Area of Jiangxi, China

There is currently a wide variety of methods used to evaluate soil contamination. We present a discussion of the advantages and limitations of different soil contamination assessment methods. In this study, we analyzed seven trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn) that are indicators of soil contamination in Dexing, a city in China that is famous for its vast nonferrous mineral resource...

An Overview of GIS-Based Modeling and Assessment of Mining-Induced Hazards: Soil, Water, and Forest

In this study, current geographic information system (GIS)-based methods and their application for the modeling and assessment of mining-induced hazards were reviewed. Various types of mining-induced hazard, including soil contamination, soil erosion, water pollution, and deforestation were considered in the discussion of the strength and role of GIS as a viable problem-solving tool in relation...
